Carlow Town Development Forum is encouraging all to support the biodiversity of Carlow Town and today launched Carlow Town’s first Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan 2021-2025, created for the Forum by Scott Cawley Ltd., Ecological Consultants.

The Strategy is another milestone in the drive to improve biodiversity within Carlow Town which began with the pilot Biodiversity Garden at Barrack Street, Carlow. The Garden, designed by Dee Sewell MCI Hort., Greenside Up, was the first in a series of actions to support the natural flora and fauna in our Town Centre, while at the same time improving the look and feel of the Town Centre, and the Biodiversity Strategy is another step to encourage everyone to engage with and improve our Biodiversity for future generations, containing many actions which can be pursued by community groups, individuals, and the Local Authority.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr. Fergal Browne, Mayor of Carlow Municipal District, said, “This is a fantastic collaborative endeavour and the first time we’ve had a Biodiversity Strategy for Carlow Town.” Cllr. Browne continued to say, “This Strategy will provide an opportunity to improve and enhance the visual appearance of our Town Centre, while adding to the biodiversity of Carlow Town, and is a great example of a partnership approach between the Carlow Town Development Forum, Carlow County Council, local community volunteers, and Scott Cawley Ltd.”

Speaking about the importance of biodiversity in the Town Centre, Mary Ryan from the Green Group of the Carlow Town Development Forum said, “it’s important that we create a balanced urban environment and increase and assist biodiversity in our Town Centre, and this Biodiversity Strategy is another step in achieving these aims.” Mary continued to say, “we are delighted to launch this Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan which will develop a blueprint for the future of our Town.”

Speaking about the Strategy, Padraig O’Gorman Director of Services with Carlow County Council said, “This Strategy is an opportunity to improve and reinvigorate Carlow Town Centre, making it a modal for biodiversity and sustainability in the short and long term and we in Carlow County Council look forward to working with the Forum on projects as a result of this piece of work.”. The Director continued to say, “The Strategy aims to create a more attractive environment for residents, visitors, shoppers and businesses and to have a focus on good planting design and works that will comply with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, the National Biodiversity Action Plan, and the EU Biodiversity Strategy.”
