Catherine Fulvio's new TV series Tastes Like Home - goes to Clonegal in Carlow

Food evokes emotion and Catherine Fulvio's new TV series, Tastes Like Home, does just that as she travels from Portland, Oregan to Dubai

Much loved TV chef, food writer and owner of Ballyknocken House & Cookery School, Catherine Fulvio, returns to our screens on Fridays (RTE1 7.30pm) with a brand new format food and travel TV series called, Tastes like Home, which is being sponsored by Londis.

Tastes like Home is more than a food show, this is a format that will strike a chord with every Irish family as it takes us on a whistle-stop tour across the globe to surprise a family member who lives abroad. Catherine selects six families to join her on a mission to establish a meal that “Tastes like Home” and to bring these tastes to their family members across the globe.  Visiting Irish diaspora living in destinations as diverse as San Sebastian, Portland Oregan and Dubai Catherine recreates a taste from a loved one in Ireland.  Each featured Irish family has a sginature dish that says 'home' to them.

This week Shelia in Clonegal teaches Catherine how to make Nettle Soup for her daughter, MaryClare, who lives in London with probably one of the best views; she lives on a houseboat on the Thames beside Tower bridge, so Catherine has to get her sea legs on in order to cook dinner onboard her boat.  They also visit urban bee keepers to see how the bees are thriving on london’s rooftops. They also visit urban bee keepers to see how the bees are thriving on london’s rooftops. 

In subsequent weeks Catherine will head to Navan before flying to Dubai to visit Aoife Baxter and heads out to spend a night in the dessert under the stars and visit the ancient spice souks.  In Barcelona Catherine meets Micheal who left County Clare 6 years ago and together they visit the sights and get to grips with the differences between Spanish and Catalan foods and learn to love Salted Cod, and discover what a 'witches nose' is?

"The series has turned out to be far more emotional than we expected with some wonderful food and really heartfelt moments" says Catherine.
