County Council Approach

Carlow County Council today (12th May 2016) announced funding of two new schemes aimed at brightening up the Towns and Villages across the County. The new schemes are part of a suite of supports designed to support the commercial sector in County Carlow and enhance the visitor experience to Carlow’s Towns and Villages.

Announcing the Community led Commercial Property Paint Scheme and a Hanging Basket / Window Box Scheme the council recognised the power of partnership as the schemes are delivered in partnership with community groups across the County.

Speaking about the schemes, Kathleen Holohan, Chief Executive said “Carlow County Council is keen to put in place supports that improve the appearance of both occupied and derelict commercial premises in our towns and villages, this in turn will enhance the attractiveness of County Carlow as a business location and help generate economic activity”.

Kieran Comerford, Head of Enterprise, Carlow County Council, said that “the schemes are designed to provide supports to commercial premises to enhance the streetscape in County Carlow”. These schemes provide an opportunity for community groups to work with commercial businesses to improve the outside appearance of their premises by providing hanging baskets and window boxes at a significantly reduced cost or in the case of derelict commercial premises, with the owner’s permission, to paint these premises.

Comerford concluded by saying that “as this is a community led scheme commercial premises will be contacted by their approved community group to find out if they wish to participate in the schemes”.
