Carlow County Council today announced it had been awarded funding, of €10,000 by the Department of Taoiseach which will allow for the development of a Local Diaspora Engagement Strategy which will be designed to engage County Carlow’s significant international links from an economic, social, sporting and cultural dimension for the benefit of the ongoing development of the County.

Speaking about the announcement, Dan McInerney – Acting Chief Executive of Carlow County Council, said “the Local Diaspora Strategy Development Fund enables Carlow County Council to take the lead in developing a strategy at local level which will be used as a blueprint for the engagement of international visitors and partners”. McInerney continued to say “It is our belief that the development of a strategy will allow us to build on already existing networks and activities in order to facilitate a deeper engagement in a way that reflects local priorities”

The strategy which will be developed using a variety of methods will be delivered over the coming months via a partnership between the Community & Economic sections of Carlow County Council.

Speaking about the announcement, Cllr John Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said “We in Carlow County Council very much welcome this project which will further streamline the delivery of services for the benefit of all”. Murphy continued to say “Carlow already has significant links from an education, economic and community viewpoint and this strategy, it is hoped, will see the formalisation of these engagements which could yield significant benefits for County Carlow in the areas of tourism, culture, sports, community and economic development.

The Local Diaspora Engagement Strategy fund builds on the objectives of Global Irish – Ireland’s Diaspora Policy which seeks to facilitate a wide range of activity at national and local level designed to develop two-way diaspora engagement.
