Three communities to share €72,363 funding for Town & Village Accelerated Scheme

A total of €72,363 has been allocated for improvements to three towns and villages around Carlow.

The funding, allocated under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, is a key part of the Action Plan for Rural Development and the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 Programme for Rural Regeneration for its Accelerated Scheme to assist communities with the response to Covid.

Speaking about the projects, Tom O’Neill, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said “I am delighted to see this allocation for Carlow and we hope it is one of many for 2020 with further applications currently being prepared for the standard scheme and further accelerated applications to be presented during August”. The Cathaoirleach continued to say, “The benefit of previous funding under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme is now being felt countrywide and I am delighted today that even more areas in Carlow will benefit from the funding,”

Speaking about the importance with engagement with communities, Kathleen Holohan, Chief Executive said “I’d like to thank the communities who came forward during these challenging times to develop projects under the Town & Village scheme and we as a local authority look forward to working with you on these projects which will enhance the community experience for all who visit, work, live and play in these areas”. Concluding the Chief Executive said, “I’d like to thank Helen Ryan our Economic Development Officer who works with our communities under this scheme”.

The grant covers a variety of projects in County Carlow which include adaptations to a community centre, easy clean street furniture, enhancement of an amenity area and promotional campaigns to encourage visiting and spending in the areas.

Speaking about the county’s approach to the Town & Village Scheme, Pauline Hoctor, Senior Enterprise Development Officer said “Schemes like the Town & Village scheme are all about active community engagement and provide an excellent platform for collaboration between the Local Authority and communities”, Hoctor continued to say “we are delighted to be working with County Carlow Chamber on this project also to collectively market County Carlow and all it has to offer at this time.
