Intermediate winners of the Cavan Student Enterprise Awards 2014

The County Final of the Student Enterprise Awards for 2014 took place on 5th March 2014.

Loreto College Cavan scooped the top prizes in each category at the annual Cavan County Enterprise Board Student Enterprise Awards 2014. Over 250 students arrived at the Slieve Russell Hotel on Wednesday morning, March 5th, to exhibit their business projects and face the judges in a bid to win one of fifteen awards being presented. Six schools entered a total of 50 business projects in the competition and each award winner received an engraved trophy and cash prize. The winners in each category, representing Co. Cavan, went forward to the National Final of the County & City Enterprise Board Student Enterprise Awards 2014, which was held in Croke Park on April 2nd 2014.

The top award in Cavan in the Senior Category was won by Loreto College with their project “Bee Happy Bee Healthy”. An innovative idea which aims to promote awareness of good mental health by producing magnets with positive quotes to enhance and brighten people’s daily lives. The Bee Happy Bee Health Team believe that it is a subtle yet effective way of promoting mental health. Loreto College also clinched the top awards in both the Junior and Intermediate Category. “Shortn’it”, winner of the Intermediate Category, was created by an enterprising team of second year students who wanted to create a useful sewing kit of different materials and essentials to recycle old shorts and turn them into something new and fashionable. The winner of the Junior Category was a group of first year Loreto College students, who wanted to promote environmentally friendly waste management by providing family households with cost effective and convenient solutions to reduce waste and recycle food leftovers. Their product was a compact and space saving kitchen compost bin which is ideal for the green conscious family.

 

Other winners on the day were, St. Bricin’s College Belturbet who came second in the Senior Category with “Plant Life”, an innovative timber framed vegetable and flower growing system. The Royal School Cavan won third prize in the Senior Category with their project “Millworks”, and they also claimed the Special Award for Innovation in the Senior Category and the Special Award for Innovation in the Junior Category with “Chalk Talk” and “Maths Tips & Tricks” respectively.   St. Clare’s College Ballyjamesduff won two awards in the Intermediate Category, “Snazzy Mugs” scooped the Special Award for Display and Second place in the category.
