Clare Food Start-Up Makes Retail Breakthrough

Cary’s Ice Cream from Ennis is one of 11 food and drink producers from around the country to secure a space on SuperValu shelves this month, through the Food Academy Programme.

Cary’s Ice Cream supported by Local Enterprise Office Clare, began the Food Academy Start Programme in 2017. This is a training programme run by the Local Enterprise Offices with the support of Bord Bia and SuperValu and it prepares and enables small food producers to become suppliers to SuperValu.

Cary’s Ice Cream can now be found in key SuperValu stores from this month as part of a trial, marking a major milestone for the start-up food business which makes lactose free premium ice cream. Cary’s Premium Ice Cream is all natural and contains no additives just good old fashioned milk and cream.  They have added the lactase enzyme which breaks down the milk sugar and allows for people with lactose intolerance to now enjoy ice cream just like everyone else.

Run over a series of workshops, the Food Academy programme is now in its fifth year and nurtures new start-ups in the food and drink sector. It focuses on areas such as business planning, food safety, responding to market trends and driving sales.

The local food producer will be joining more established Irish brands which have successfully completed the Food Academy Programme in recent years, such as Meere’s Pork Products, Burren Smokehouse, Western Herd Brewery, Wicked Wholefoods, Clare Jam, Magic Mayan Chocolates, Guru TeaHouse, D’Vine Nut Butters, Kelly’s Meat Store, The Happy Pear, Dr Coy's, Fresh from the Pier and Coffee House Lane.
