Heavens Cakes

Heaven’s Cakes Bakery was first established by my husband Joe Hegarty in 1996. It was ahead of its time selling artisan produce such as French mousse cakes, fresh open tarts and hand crafted breads. When I met Joe in 1997 he was very busy running every aspect of the business – which is a very hard thing to do and so welcomed my input and fresh approach to the business. Having grown up in Germany, I was able to add a certain calmness and discipline to Joe’s creative talents. He used to come up with exciting new recipes and I used to translate them into a workable routine for the bakery and staff. It’s the perfect “yin and yang” really!

I was always interested in business and making my own decisions. So joining Joe in his business when I was only 19 was a very natural thing for me to do. I have literally grown up with the business and it is very much a part of me. Both Joe and I are classically trained chefs. He trained at Rockwell and I trained at CIT, where I also studied two years of advanced pastry. I regularly attend training courses, some of which have taken me abroad. At the École Lenôtre Paris I studied artisan breads and traditional methods of baking. At London’s Peggy Porschen Cakes academy I received my diploma as professional cake maker and recently I completed a food safety training programme which allows me train our staff on food hygiene.

Our product range includes traditionalFrench patisserie with a modern twist, including: tarts, mousse cakes and morning pastries. We also make savory tarts as well as a wide range of artisan breads, all freshly made.

In Bandon, we have a bread bakery and a confectionary bakery. We have a shop, just outside The Riverview Shopping Centre in Bandon, where all our products are available to purchase. We also take orders for customized cakes. We are at Bandon Farmers Market every Saturday so come along to meet us and taste our products.

Both Joe and I regularly partake in training programmes run by the Local Enterprise Office Cork North & West.  The training helps us to stay focused in our business and we learn new practical skills.  The Big Red Book Accounting programme gave me the tools to do my own accounting and payroll. Also a Personal & business development programme helped to strategically plan and grow our business. During one to one mentoring with a food consultant through the LEO, I gained the confidence to immerse myself more in the business by managing the day to day running of the business.

I love the fact that I can be pastry chef one day, a barista the next and a manager of our team, the day after. Being a woman in business is never easy - it is a bit like this: talking to your accountant on the phone while cooking dinner and patiently explaining to your toddler not to draw on the walls! I am currently partaking in a new Women in Business programme in Clonakilty through the LEO and I am looking forward to this exciting management development programme”.
