Ocean Bloom is a new West Cork business based on the stunning Beara Peninsula. We provide an exciting range of organic seaweed skincare products Our range is for men and women of all ages and for those with balanced as well as troublesome skin. At the heart of our products lies the long known natural therapeutic power of seaweed. Our seaweed comes from the Atlantic water that surrounds the Beara shores.

So who am I? I am Cheryl Cleminson. Having studied aromatherapy, I was always interested in oils and skin care.

In early 2000, I changed jobs and became a builder’s labourer, I loved the outdoor work and got a taste for it when we bought a derelict house, had it demolished and built our home.  In February 2002, I was looking at property in Ireland that needed renovating and we saw a house on Bere Island, we contacted the owners and agreed to purchase it over the phone before even seeing it! Our girls were 12 and 14 at the time. We moved over in June 2002 and have lived here since with our family.

I always used my aromatherapy and knowledge of oils to help heal and also moisturise my very dry skin caused by working in the wind and rain. When Alfie James my second grandson was born in 2013 with baby eczema, my daughter tried all the creams available and I made oils for his skin but we couldn’t help him. One day an elderly lady mentioned seaweed and I started collecting small amounts of it, for his bath. His skin started to heal. It was so wonderful to see him without his sore skin.

At the same time a young boy in the area received bad burns on his face so I made a blend of oils and seaweed serum for him.  After 6 months his little face was scar free. From then on, people started asking me to make creams and oils for them and that’s how my now Ocean Bloom range was formed.

At Ocean Bloom, we are committed to offering the highest quality skincare made with pure West Cork organic seaweed and other superior ingredients which are also organic and completely natural. They do not contain parabens, SLS, silicons, sulphates, petrochemicals, mineral oils and are gluten free.

I have received a lot of support from the Local Enterprise Office in West Cork including mentoring, a start your own business programme, an Online Trading Voucher for my website. I regularly meet with Deirdre O’Mahony at the office who has helped me move forward again with finishing my business plan so I can possibly look at applying for a start up grant for my business.

I am excited to be attending Showcase 2016 in Dublin and was lucky enough to have been given the chance to have exhibit with a group of Cork craft and gift producers in the Local Enterprise Office area.

Luck seems to be going my way at the moment as I was very recently offered a place at Rubicon EXXCEL Women in Business 6 month programme.

For anyone thinking of starting their own business, my advice would be to contact their Local Enterprise Office. There are a lot of supports for new business start-ups. Get connected with other local businesses and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
