Lean For Micro Business Programme

The Local Enterprise Office in Galway is delighted to offer a ‘Lean For Micro Business Programme’ for select small and medium clients, in particular those that would benefit greatly from the very substantial improvements in productivity and profitability that can result from the application of Lean principles and techniques.

Gain a Practical Understanding of Lean Benefits

What is Lean? Lean is about being effective and efficient - doing things quicker, better, cheaper…together.  Lean strives to stamp out waste and to continually improve. The programme consists of a workshop for owner/managers and senior staff of small and micro businesses across a variety of sectors who wish to gain an introduction to Lean concepts. They will then gain a practical understanding of Lean by undertaking a short, focused in-company assignment with mentoring support.

On successful completion of the programme, participants will have the knowledge and skills to enable them to undertake small lean projects resulting in continuous improvements on an ongoing basis in their businesses.

Outstanding Results and Savings

The programme will consist of a one day workshop which will provide an introduction to Lean concepts, followed by mentoring support in undertaking a short in-company Lean assignment over 3 months. The programme has produced outstanding results and a total savings of over €544,000 across 6 companies in 2016 and over €488,000 across 4 companies in 2017.

Learn a Variety of Lean Tools and Techniques

The one day workshop training will take place in the training room of the Galway Local Enterprise office in the County Buildings, Prospect Hill, Galway and will run from 9.00am until 5.00pm. Topics covered include an Introduction, overview and benefits of Lean Principles and Practices, Practical Lean Simulation highlighting a variety of Lean tools and techniques, Introduction to Lean management systems for growth and Lean Assignment and Mentoring.

The in-company assignment will be identified during the workshop and participants will receive regular support in their assignment from a Lean consultant.  Goals will be set at the start of the assignment and resourceful mentoring will ensue to develop transferable skills in applying training. Each participating business will receive up to 4 support visits of half a day each to their premises over the assignment period.

On completion of the assignments, the group will come together again for a follow up session where they can present their successes and learn from each other, fostering a lean network going forward.  Each business will present first, then there will be a facilitated discussion on what went well, challenges, learnings, etc.

Lean tools and techniques are helping companies across the globe

Lean tools and techniques are helping companies across the globe to address competitiveness issues within their businesses, building the capability of their team members to identify issues and improve their operations. Lean for Micro is designed to encourage clients to adopt Lean business principles in their organisations in order to increase competitiveness.

The key to becoming and remaining competitive is Lean: the relentless pursuit of value to the customer.

More About Lean

Lean requires that individuals, teams and the entire organisation remain continuously focussed on the customer. It requires companies to adopt a practical approach to increasing value to the customer by the relentless elimination of every form of unnecessary waste. Lean is a way of thinking and acting that enables people to drive the organisation forward.  It increases capability and capacity, and is the catalyst for innovation.

Lean helps to ensure flexibility, responsiveness, efficiency and innovation. By continuously listening to the customer, it allows companies to compete and win on merit.

The LEO Lean for Micro business programme helps to identify issues and potential improvement areas. It also provides support to implement and achieve savings and improvements in capability and capacity to deliver. In 2014, Forfas carried out an independent review of Enterprise Ireland’s Lean Business offer and found that companies engaged in the programme recorded the following significant gains. An increase in productivity (20%), sales (40%), delivery adherence (43%), product and service quality (30%), employment (11%).
