Lean for Micro Business Programme, 2019 – Now open for applications

So far this year, six Galway companies have made savings totalling €820,000 after participating in this programme!

The Local Enterprise Office in Galway is delighted to offer a Lean Business Programme for selected clients, in particular those that would benefit greatly from the very substantial improvements in productivity and profitability that can result from the application of Lean principles.  The programme consists of a Workshop for owner/managers and senior staff of small and micro businesses across a variety of sectors who wish to gain an introduction to Lean concepts. They will then gain a practical understanding of Lean by undertaking a short, focused in-company assignment with mentoring support.

On successful completion of the programme, participants will have the knowledge and skills to enable them to undertake small lean projects resulting in continuous improvements on an ongoing basis in their businesses.

Programme Content

The programme will consist of a one day workshop which will provide an introduction to Lean concepts, followed by mentoring support in undertaking a short in-company lean assignment over 3 months.

The programme has produced results and savings of over €544,000 – 6 companies – 2016 and over €488,000 – 4 companies – 2017.    In 2018 – 7 companies – savings of €587,000.    In 2019 – 6 companies – savings of €820,000

WHAT’S INVOLVED ?

Workshop Training

There is a one day workshop which will take place in the Menlo Park Hotel, hosted by the Galway Local Enterprises office and will run from 9.00am until 5.00pm.

In summary the workshop will cover ;

  • Introduction, overview and benefits of Lean principles & practices
  • Practical Lean Simulation highlighting a variety of lean tools and techniques
  • Introduction to Lean management systems for growth

Lean Assignment & Mentoring

The in-company assignment will be identified during the workshop. Participants will receive regular support in their assignment from a Lean consultant over a 3 month period.  Goals will be set at the start of the assignment and resourceful mentoring will ensue to develop transferable skills in applying the training.  Each participating business will receive up to 4 support visits of half a day each to their premises over the period to bring their assignment to a successful conclusion.

Follow up review session

On completion of the assignments the group will come together again for a Follow Up session where they can present their successes and learn from each other, fostering a lean network going forward.  Each business will present first, then there will be a facilitated discussion on what went well, challenges, learnings, etc.

Delivery Consultancy

The Trainer and Mentor for this programme will be Paula McNicholas from Lean Team Strategies. Lean Team Strategies is one Ireland’s leading Lean consultancies and is based here in the West.  Paula is well qualified in implementing Lean with a wealth of functional and sectoral experience, in businesses of different sizes.  She particularly specializes in helping SME’s and as well as having successfully implemented a number of Enterprise Ireland funded projects, she has already delivered a Lean Business Programme for a number of businesses in Galway and County Galway which has been very well received and has delivered excellent productivity and profitability improvements for participating businesses.

Programme Outcomes

On completion of the programme participants should have gained a sound understanding of lean concepts. The practical workshop, using a simulation throughout, gives an effective and memorable application of lean principles, tools and techniques. It provides skills in the most commonly used tools and methods applied by SME’s.

The participants should also know how to identify suitable lean projects and should have implemented their initial lean assignment in their businesses.  The lean assignment should yield beneficial savings for the business, along with improved systems and processes, better communication and should be working towards a lean culture.

Cost

The programme is heavily subsidised by the Local Enterprise Office but will be offered at a subsidised rate of €500 per company to the selected companies.   There is availability for 2 places per company on the programme.

Please feel free to give us a call and we can discuss the programme further or answer any questions you may have. Places are limited.
