The purpose of this 4-week Start Your Own Business training is to provide participants with the tips, tools and techniques required to set up and effectively manage a start-up business. The training considers the various elements involved in starting and maintaining a new business: The Person, The Process, The Business Plan and The Promotion. At the end of this training, the participants will have a greater understanding of the various aspects required to establish and effectively maintain a viable and feasible business offering.

20th of April - Session 1 The Person

  • Introduction to Self-employment – Pros and Cons
  • Business idea generation – Utilising your experience, credentials and creativity
  • Identifying growth sectors and other sources of business opportunities
  • Job Description design for Self Employment role
  • Self-Assessment & Personality Profiling – DISC, Motivations, Talents
  • Goal setting – identifying personal actions, preferred outcomes and rewards
  • SWOT Analysis - Personal and Marketplace
  • Skills Gap Analysis – Overcoming non-Talents
  • Connecting the person to the Business Plan – Kipling 6

27th April - Session 2 The Process

  • Different legal types of self-employment – sole trader/partnership/company
  • Registering my Business (TR1 form, CRO)
  • Domain name and email registrations
  • Setting up a Business Bank Account
  • Insurance types – Public & Product liability, Professional Indemnity
  • Statutory compliance issues
  • VAT, PRSI, PAYE, Income Tax, USC and registering using
  • Maintaining accurate records, receipts and reconciliations
  • Y/E Accounts obligations and timescales
  • Calculating your Preliminary tax returns

4th of May - Session 3 The Business Plan

  • The Business Plan – templates provided
  • Purpose, Format, Structure, Style
  • Creating a clear Executive Summary and coherent business offering
  • Future proofing – Reviewing the Viability and Feasibility of the business
  • Pivoting and expanding your total business solutions
  • Projections for the business - SMART Goal setting (1 and 3 years)
  • Start-Up, Investment and operational costs – Cost Benefit Analysis
  • Profit & Loss Accounts and basic Bookkeeping
  • Credit Control and Cash flow Management

11th of May - Session 4 The Promotion

  • The Marketing Mix – 4 P’s
  • Developing a Marketing Plan
  • Developing a Sales Action Plan, Lead generation and pipeline maintenance
  • Communicating USP’s, Features & Benefits, Taglines and networking tips
  • Improving your sales techniques – Feel, Felt, Found Strategy
  • Handling rejections, negotiating tips and discussing business terms up-front
  • Sales & Social Media Promotions (LinkedIn, FB, Instagram etc.)
  • R&D – Conducting qualitative and quantitative research (Competitors & Connections)
  • Other training/networking supports – LEO Mayo/INTREO/ETB’s etc.
  • Grants, Schemes and Loans – ESG Grant, BTWEA, STEA, Micro Finance Ireland

Michael Kilcullen has over 20 years’ experience in the provision of Recruitment and Talent Management and Development services.
