“Thinking aloud” is a 2-day workshop on the 20th and 28th July, covering business, marketing, and brand building and provides attendees with an opportunity to review and improve their existing marketing and business practices. Working in teams through a blended learning experience, the sessions are designed to inspire, inform and educate. If you are working in the creative sector as an artist, designer, or maker, this workshop will help you develop your practice and work in order to attract new customers and markets.

Day 1 Morning. 10.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.

  • Marketing and defining your customers and audience.
  • Understanding user experience and developing a communications plan.
  • Identifying what makes you and your work unique.
  • Building your brand story. Creating a brand vision.

Afternoon 2 p.m. - 4.30 p.m. 

  • Designing a brand, tools, and methods.
  • Briefing a designer and ensuring you control the brand.

Day 2 Morning 10.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.

  • Let’s talk business. Making a plan to succeed and progress.
  • Costing your work.
  • Understanding tax and keeping proper records.
  • Applying for Artist’s exemption.

Afternoon 2.00 p.m. - 4.30 p.m

Developing your online offer and website.

  • Creating content.
  • Understanding UX design, website platforms, and analytics.
  • Social media, trends, and best practices.

Your Trainers Colin McKeown and Marian McDonald

Colin McKeown.

With over 35 years of experience working in advertising, design, and the creative industries, Colin has held many senior positions in communications companies and undertaken design projects throughout Ireland and the UK. He now works in three areas: Branding, Service Design / UX, and Mentoring. He became a Mentor for the DCCI in 2016 and undertakes talks, workshops, and mentoring to assist mature and start-up businesses become more successful. As he states, “in today’s world, user-experience will dictate success,” I work with clients helping them identify their customer requirements and improving the relationship between designing creative products, running a business, and making money.

Marian McDonald.

Marian is a self-employed Tax Advisor with nearly 3 decades of experience as a Business Tutor working with more than 2000 Craftspeople assisting them in the development of their businesses. She is contracted to DCCI (Dublin Craft Council of Ireland); Visual Artists Ireland and many LEOs throughout the country. Her approach is one of common sense and based on her experiences in the craft and financial/taxation sectors.
