Background to Food Academy

To help develop Ireland’s artisan food industry, the Local Enterprise Offices, SuperValu and Bord Bia joined forces in 2013 to create ‘Food Academy’ – a tailored programme for early to mid-stage food business owners. The aim of Food Academy is to provide small food businesses with a solid foundation to progress confidently onto retail shelves.

Food Academy is a training programme aimed at supporting and nurturing start-up food businesses. The Local Enterprise Offices have joined forces with Bord Bía and SuperValu on this initiative to provide a consistent level of food marketing knowledge to new and early-stage food business owners.

Crucially SuperValu also provide successful participants with the opportunity to trial their product in their local stores for a period of 12 weeks. At the final workshop, participants will get the opportunity to present their product to a panel from SuperValu and if successful, can participate in a trial based in local shops, which in the right circumstances, could progress over time to a national listing with SuperValu.

There is no guarantee of your product being listed as part of the programme. This provides a real advantage to small businesses in terms of real retail learnings, as they are in a position to liaise with the store to gain feedback on their product from both the store staff and consumers. Such learnings will help the producer to further develop their product, marketing approach, packaging and distribution.

There are currently over 300 Food Academy small producers in Supervalu stores. Half of all Food Academy participants expect sales to increase by 50% or more over the next 12 months
