This course is intended to provide candidates with the competency to complete a range of manual handling tasks safely and to identify and assess the risks associated with the task. The program follows a set syllabus incorporating a mix of theory, practical, group work and demonstrations.

On completion of the course the participant will:
Be able to demonstrate awareness of safe systems of work appropriate to a range of manual handling operations, recognise if a load is too heavy or awkward, lift and be familiar with safe lifting techniques compliant with current best practice.
Have a good knowledge of hazards presenting general risk of injury and the ability to manage the risks of injury in a manual handling operation.
Have a good knowledge of safe lifting and materials handling techniques and awareness of your responsibilities.
Course Syllabus
- Definitions: Legal and technical terminology
- Introduction to physiology of the spine and basic biomechanics
- Risk Assessment- general, hazardous loads (group work)
- Environment and manual handling hazards
- Risk reduction and elimination
- Safe lifting and handling techniques using light loads such as boxes
- Good housekeeping
- Personal protective equipment
Participants on this course will be awarded a certificate of completion by Safety Quality Systems
