Barrons Coffee House - Coming Out of Covid

130 years since its establishment and Barrons Bakery in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford has continued its evolution resolutely under the helm of 4th generation baker, Esther Barron and her husband Joe Prendergast.

The bakery has been at the heart of Cappoquin since the 1800’s and in 1980 Esther inherited the family business when it was left to her by her father Joe Barron.

In 1983, Esther opened the town’s first coffee shop and further developed the confectionery side of the business. In April 2016 the business was taken over by

Emma O’Keefe and Aoife Hallahan and the coffee house in the heart of the picturesque village continues to exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere serving quality, tasty and nutritious dishes or a hearty bowl of home-made soup, the perfect accompaniment to Barrons Bread and blaas.

With the advent of COVID-19, and following Government directive, while the production of bread and bakes continued for supply to grocery stores and retailers, the Coffee House sit in side of the Business was temporarily closed for several months.  In line with the Government’s roadmap to reopening the economy, Emma and Aoife continued to sell bread and take away coffees Mon-Thurs with extended takeaway menu of Sweet Treats, Savoury items including the tasty Breakfast Blaa on Friday & Saturdays, they were open for takeaway from March 18th  which proved very popular with locals and those from the surrounding townlands.  The café fully reopened for sit down on June 29th.

Stringent measures were put in place to ensure the safety of Barrons Coffee House’s customers and suppliers and the reassuring measures are evident as soon as you enter the Café.  Some of these include:

  • Hand sanitisation points at the entrance, by the till & by the toilets
  • Reduction of table and chairs to accommodate social distancing
  • Perspex guards at point of sale / Perspex unit at bread display
  • Staff facemasks / medically approved facevisors
  • Covid-19 distancing signage markers throughout the Coffee House
  • Extra cleaning and disinfection of all food prep and common areas
  • Pre-order (telephone / Facebook Messenger / Mobile Text Number given) for takeaway service
