Tell us a little about your new business?

Over the last 5 years, I have travelled and worked all over Ireland doing tours. I have always felt that the South-East was lacking in publicity and attraction for tourists. In March 2017 the Waterford Greenway was officially launched and has been a massive success - particularly for tourists focused businesses.

Originally I wanted to start a segway rentals business based on the greenway, but this wasn't meant to be. It was the search for alternative options to the segway that inspired me to investigate scooters, my family use scooters maybe other families will also like to use scooters on the greenway. This, in essence, was the birth of "Green Scooter Hire."

Green Scooter Hire - rents out kids and adult scooters with various packages available. We also sell the scooters now and have recently started renting electric scooters.

What were the biggest challenges setting up the business?

Setting up the business has been a rollercoaster and stressful at times.

Sourcing finance is an issue for all new businesses starting, it was also difficult finding affordable retail space with reasonable rates and insurance.

When did you make contact with LEO?

I was in the market for business advice, I approached the social welfare to partake in the BTWEA, but this was not an option. I attended a trade fair in the city and stumbled across the LEO stand. I spoke with a LEO representative and he advised me to attend a "General Business Advice" clinic and to look at the "Start Your Own Business" boot camp, all of which I attended in the coming weeks.

How did the boot camp help you develop the business?

I had so many questions and anxiety starting my own business and I was not alone, everyone attending the course was the same. We learnt about presenting our business plans in the right manner and analysing our plans using SWOT analysis.

The trainers covered everything from VAT to IP, from Digital Marketing to legal structures. Most importantly we networked with all the other attendees and I learnt a lot from them.

The LEO staff were open about financial supports and they provided me with mentoring to help me get Micro Finance, which was instrumental in getting the business going.

What are your plans for the future?

I am an entrepreneur with a drive to succeed; my goal is to explore different avenues in this sector. The Greenway has so much to offer. I suppose my biggest goal is to make sure Green Scooter stays afloat for the next 12 months.
