Simple Book-Keeping using Excel

 

AIM:  A practical course, aimed at those who are involved in running a small business :

  • To provide participants with tools to keep a set of books, manage their finances and comply with tax obligations
  • Cover all elements of setting up a simple bookkeeping system

 

NOTE: This course will be aimed at those who wish to learn Basic Bookkeeping and how to keep a set of books using an Excel Spreadsheet.  It would be imperative that participants have a basic knowledge of operating excel spreadsheet before undertaking this course. 

 

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course Trainees should be able to 

  • Keep appropriate records  and  start to prepare daybooks
  • Understand  inputs and outputs of good bookkeeping
  • Execute proper controls for good bookkeeping
  • Understand core tax compliance issues around bookkeeping and principles of same
  • Extract key information for taxation and financial management purposes

  • Self Assessment system explained – income tax compliance obligations
  • Record keeping obligations – keep the right records for your business and how long to keep them
  • Deductible expenses
  • Treatment of different types of costs and revenues for bookkeeping purposes

 

Introduction to Bookkeeping

  • Basic bookkeeping and accounts terminology explained
  • Principles of good Bookkeeping
  • Dealing with your accountant

 

Preparation of Day Books Using Excel

  • Cash Receipts Book  & Cheque Payments Book (Bank Book)
  • Sales book
  • Purchases book 
  • Petty Cash Book or equivalent
  • Introduction to VAT and compliance obligations
  • Bookkeeping for VAT v Non VAT businesses
  • Establishing a system to suit your business

 

Extracting Useful Information from the Books

  • Setting up daybooks above to ensure useful information available for tax returns and financial management
  • Extract key information from your records and compiling a Snapshot Report, Profit & Loss and  Balance Sheet.
