This programme is designed for those who are in the early stages of considering whether to take the plunge in self-employment. It is a first step for those considering starting their own business. It ensures that participants are fully aware of key tasks, issues and steps involved in starting a business. It gives the tools that they can make an informed decision as to whether they wish to pursue self-employment.
This is a basic informational day which includes information on how to estimate the start-up cost of their business, coping with the transition from working full-time to owning their own business, financial impact on personal/family life, how to manage fallout if not successful, social welfare restrictions/supports and other financial supports for those starting a business.

The programme will deal with these issues and any other that arise during the programme.
- Entrepreneurship – what is it?
- What does being an entrepreneur mean to you and your family? Can you hack working for yourself?
- Money, you cannot lose sight of the fact that you are in business to make money
- How will you make money? What will you be selling and to whom? Can you sell it and make money with it?
- How are you going to look after the red tape, can you minimise red tape?
- The legal issues invoiced in getting started
- Tax and responsibilities
- Insurance
- Doing the admin
- Selling, and getting money for the work
- Planning and self-motivation through targets. Who can help you starting up? How will you fund this idea?
- Government supports
- Other supports
- What is the worst thing that can happen and what happens if it does?
At the end of this module participants will have a better understanding of:
- What being in business for themselves entails
- How to begin building a realistic plan for themselves as well as their business
- The supports that exist for micro entrepreneurs
