Workshop Content

While giving a clear description of the roles involved within committees, this session will be a very practical discussion upon the actual implications of the Committee roles, and the methods by which they can be addressed.

Workshop content will include:

  • What are the different roles required by a committee involved in running a childcare service?
  • Difference between Members and Officers, Officers and Directors, (e.g. Chairperson, Secretary, etc.)
  • What are trustees?
  • What responsibility arises from the above roles?
  • How do these roles impact upon the day to day operations within the childcare service?
  • Where does the role of the committee end and the Manager begin?
  • Why do we need a Terms of Reference or Constitution?
  • What does governance mean for a childcare services?
  • How to identify the areas for improvement to achieve compliance with the Charities Governance Code, e.g. recommendations for changes to the policies and procedures, organisational structure, etc. in a childcare service
  • Advancing charitable purpose, i.e. Strategic Planning, Purpose and Vision
  • Behaving with integrity, i.e. conflict of interests and codes of conduct
  • Leading people, i.e. clarity of roles, including trustees, managers, staff and volunteers
  • Exercising control, i.e. financial control and risk management
  • Working effectively, i.e. working as a Board (not staff), including meetings, training and succession planning
  • Being accountable and transparent, i.e. financial accountability and publicly declaring funding, income and reports
