Course Objective:

This course is designed as a workshop with opportunities to participate and contribute. It will give participants an in-depth understanding of the bookkeeping and accounting issues business owners need to be aware of to enable them to prepare and control their business accounts and meet all Revenue obligations. Sarah will show clear and effective Powerpoint slides to teach the participants and will give detailed demonstrations and practical business examples to illustrate the topic.

Course Outline:

  • Why do we keep books and records? For how long?
  • The Elements of Accounting - Assets, Liabilities, Income, Cost of Sales and Expenses
  • Allowable Business Expenses o Keeping and recording financial records – ‘The Books’ – Sales, Purchases, Bank transactions etc
  • Debtors and Creditors o Bank Reconciliation
  • The Profit and Loss Account
  • The Balance Sheet
  • Revenue tax obligations on a small business
  • Revenue Online Services (ROS) – registration, log-in and uses o A brief discussion on manual Vs computerised accounting
  • Opportunities to ask questions to the tutor
