for the Early Years Sector

LEO Monaghan and our partners, National Childhood Network and Monaghan County Childcare Committee,  have designed and developed a Certificate in Leadership, Management for the Early Years Sector, to meet the needs of early years, managers and supervisors in the Monaghan region. The pilot programme will be delivered by the School of Health and Science in Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Course Description:

Research across sectors finds that leadership is one of the single most important drivers of organisational performance, quality improvement and innovation in SME’s. The aim of this programme is to support and engage early years’ managers and supervisors in ethical, democratic leadership and effective management that promotes sustainable development in the early years sector. The programme is designed and developed to facilitate those working in the early years sector who wish to obtain knowledge and skills through work-based learning in authentic contexts and where assessments are linked to practice. The programme supports participants in their career readiness as competent leaders and managers of high-quality provision in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings. 

Duration:    

This one semester (12 week) programme is delivered predominantly on-line, with live on-line lectures on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 9.30pm.  In addition, live on-line classes will be delivered from 09.00hrs to 16.00hrs, on Saturday 17th April and face to face classes (or live on-line classes) on Saturday 4th July (please note, that we continue to review the ongoing public health guidelines in relation to COVID-19 and subject to that, this timetable is subject to change). 

The programme comprises of two modules:

Module One: Effective Leadership and Mentoring in the Early Years (7.5 credits)

(Topics include: leadership; professional identity and advocacy; personal strengths, qualities and skills in leadership; leadership and change: mentoring and the adult learner).

Module Two: Management and Business in the Early Years (7.5 credits)

(Topics include: management and management theories; key function of management and human recourses strategies; planning, decision making, regulation and policy; managing the organisation’s interpersonal and cultural environment funding/financial mechanisms and programmes with ECCE).

Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants should have a QQI Level 6 in Early Childhood Studies or equivalent 
  • Currently employed in a supervisory role/manager, in an ECS setting in the Monaghan region.

Number of places available:  15

*Please note this course is for Monaghan participants only

As this is a predominantly on-line programme, students should have access to a PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course. Basic IT skills are essential.

Fees:

The pilot programme is funded by Local Enterprise Office Monaghan.  On successful approval of application, a request will be issued for a €60 deposit and a further €60 in July 2021 (payable to LEO Monaghan)
