Trading with an Edge - Prepare for Customs

The Trading with an Edge, retail series was ran earlier in the year by the Local Enterprise Office in association with the Monaghan Town Team. The aim of the workshop series was to help Monaghan retailers to keep 'trading with an edge'. Following on from the success of this series and the looming Brexit deadline we are running this evening workshop which is aimed specifically at retailers and how customs will affect them.

Retailers may be facing new costs both in their supply chain and as a result of regulatory requirements in regard to impending Brexit. During this 3 hour retail focused session, Rose Tireney will be giving an overview of the main areas that retailers need to be aware of.

Topics to be covered:

  • Customs Tariff Classification for main product lines - this will assist in review of cost base and therefore pricing
  • A review of Incoterms to get an understanding of what is covered in certain freight arrangements
  • Structure of Business - depending on how much business is conducted in Northern Ireland/UK could indicate a need for a change of the business e.g. branch/subsidiary.
  • Process, if any, conducted on product imported - this is to ascertain if potential customs reliefs are available.
  • Volume of Cross Border transactions - this will drive the question as to whether customs processing will be conducted in house or outsourced. A demonstration of what the customs software looks like will also be included.

Participants should be in a position to walk away with one or two immediate actions they can address. It will also make them aware that there are other areas to be addressed too and they can consider what further needs they may have in those areas.
