What is the Spring Makerthon?
For this year’s Local Enterprise Week 2025 we are committed to imagining all the opportunities that come from bringing creative people together to make "all the things". Makers, designers, craftspeople, coders and artists proudly bring their A-game to the same physical space for a brief but intense period of collaboration, making, hacking, and building. Sounds Awesome but who is this for?
The Spring Makerthon is for anyone with an interest in making new things. It is a social event with creativity and love of artistic expression at its heart.
What will happen on the day?
The day starts with some very quick “lightning talks” where people can pitch ideas they would like to work on. After this everyone can start working on bringing that idea to life with the help of our Tech Oompa Loompa’s (who are actually quite tall and not green). We encourage you to team up with like-minded people and it is not unusual for people to float around a few different technologies before settling on an idea they like. It might sound a little daunting if it is your first Makerthon, but it is a friendly atmosphere and we promise your skills, whatever they are will be useful and welcome. Refreshments will be served on the day with a Special Guest Speaker also joining us to share their experience and knowledge.
Special Guest Speaker
Special Guest Speaker on the day is Úna Burke. Úna Burke leather is a brand is known internationally for its luxury, hand-crafted items and innovative design. All styles are hand-cut, joined and edge finished using traditional leather-working techniques. They have featured in the pages of Vogue Italia, Numero, Dazed and Confused as well as being bought by high profile clients like Daphne Guinness, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna, among others. Úna Burke will talk about her work designing garments and accessories in Leather and how she is starting to introduce digital fabrication into her design processes.
WHAT IS CREATIVE HEARTLANDS?
The Creative Heartlands project was established across Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon in 2019 to strengthen economic growth and sustain existing enterprises in the creative sector. The regional project receives funding from Enterprise Ireland and three local authorities have been putting in place a programme of supports to assist the sector. This project aims to build on the existing structures and infrastructure in the region to sustain and grow the sector across the three counties.
