FOOD ACADEMY 2016 for the Mayo and Roscommon area.

LEO Mayo & LEO Roscommon, in conjunction with Bord Bia and Musgraves (Supervalu), will run the Food Academy programme in Mayo. The aim of the programme is to support and nurture start up and expanding food and drink businesses. The programme, designed by Bord Bia and SuperValu, will be delivered through workshop style training.

Food Academy Programme will assist you to grow your food business, develop capabilities in Marketing and Promotions, learn about calculating Costs and setting Margins, work on Product Development, Packaging, Labelling and Legislation and how to pitch your foods to supermarket buyers.

Existing suppliers to Supervalu, please note you are strongly encouraged to participate in the programme also in order to expand into shops regionally and nationally and to feature as part of the Food Academy in Supervalu stores


Workshop Content

The programme will run over 9 half days, with workshops covering the following areas:

Market Background and Understanding the Consumer

Technical Issues

  • Introduction to Finance
  • Pricing
  • New Product Development
  • Food Safety and Food Labelling
  • Packaging
  • Managing Human Resources

Growing Sales

  • Branding and Pack Design
  • Routes to Market
  • Buyer Meetings
  • Marketing Plans
  • Promoting with Confidence
  • Public Relations

The modules will be interactive, practically-based, with case studies and guest speakers arranged for some topics. Participants will be prepared for buyer meetings by role-play of meetings to gain feedback from the group and trainer. This will prepare participants for real-life buyer meetings and will be put into practice at the end of the programme where participants will have the opportunity to pitch to a local SuperValu retail representative.

Dates and Times

The workshops will be ran over nine half days, commencing form the 30th of November 2016 in Claremorris (6pm-9pm) with remaining dates taking place in early 2017.
