Food Academy Start Programme

The Food Academy is an initiative between LEO Mayo & LEO Roscommon, in conjunction with Bord Bia and Musgraves (Supervalu). The aim of the programme is to support and nurture start up and expanding food and drink businesses. The programme, designed by Bord Bia and SuperValu and is delivered through workshop style training.

Food Academy Programme assists food companies to grow their businesss, develop capabilities in marketing and promotions, learn about calculating costs and setting margins, work on product development, packaging, labelling and legislation and how to pitch your foods to supermarket buyers.

Existing suppliers to Supervalu are also encouraged to participate in the programme with the aim of expanding into shops regionally and nationally and to feature as part of the Food Academy in Supervalu stores

The programme will run over 9 half days, with workshops covering the following areas:

  • Buyer Meetings
  • Marketing Plans
  • Promoting with Confidence
  • Public Relations

The modules will be interactive, practically-based, with case studies and guest speakers arranged for some topics. Participants will be prepared for buyer meetings by role-play of meetings to gain feedback from the group and trainer. This will prepare participants for real-life buyer meetings and will be put into practice at the end of the programme where participants will have the opportunity to pitch to a local SuperValu retail representative.
