IRELAND WEST INTERNATIONAL TRADE CENTER OPENS IN PROVIDENCE

Trade Centre is U.S. landing spot for Irish companies from six counties on Ireland’s West Coast

PROVIDENCE, RI - May 25, 2017 - The Ireland West International Trade Centre (IWITC), the new U.S. landing spot for Irish businesses located in the west coast of Ireland was formally launched during a reception attended by Mayor Jorge Elorza and business leaders last night at its Providence, Rhode Island location at 177 North Main Street.

The Centre's mission - supported by six Irish counties - Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Mayo, Galway and Clare - is to facilitate international growth of Irish enterprises into the North American market using Rhode Island as their base of operations.

In the one-year run up to the IWITC’s opening, more than 30 Irish companies have come to Rhode Island to set up their U.S. presence with offices and product displays, and engaged Rhode Island business, academic and government leaders.

Mayor Elorza, the keynote speaker, welcomed the delegation from Ireland which was comprised of Irish CEOS and local government economic development officers from among the six counties.

Citing the significant role that the Irish have played throughout the city and state’s history, Mayor Elorza said, It is a pleasure to welcome the IWITC as part of our growing business community.

Providence is an international, welcoming, and an inclusive city and it is particularly exciting that we are celebrating this event because of our rich Irish-immigrant legacy.

Joanne Grehan, director of services for Mayo County Council, spoke on behalf of the Irish delegation,

The Irish companies in our counties that have been keen to enter the U.S market are now very motivated to do so in a high-value lower cost strategy using Rhode Island as their gateway, as compared to the larger, costlier and highly competitive markets such as New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. With the Norwegian Air direct flights to begin this summer between Providence’s TF
Green Airport and Shannon Airport in Clare, the Centre is a unique and very real opportunity to create new economic activity between Rhode Island and the west of Ireland. The potential upside for both sides of the Atlantic is significant.
