Offaly County Council Welcomes Landmark Google and Energy Dome Energy Storage Facility in Rhode
24/06/2026
Offaly County Council proudly welcomes the announcement of a landmark collaboration between Google and energy storage developer Energy Dome. The companies will deploy a first-of-its-kind 23 MW/200 MWh long-duration energy storage plant at the Rhode Green Energy Park.
The project is being co-developed and advanced in direct partnership with pioneering local energy infrastructure developer Lumcloon Energy. Situated on a former peat-fired thermal power plant site, the facility represents a historic leap forward in the region's shift away from fossil fuels toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The cutting-edge facility will utilise proprietary CO₂ Battery technology to absorb surplus renewable energy during periods of oversupply and dispatch firm power when grid demand rises.
Offaly County Council has long championed the Rhode Green Energy Park concept in partnership with North Offaly Development Fund CLG, whose shared vision has been vital in unlocking the economic and technological potential of the area. This major investment cements the Midlands as a central hub for clean energy infrastructure and furthers Offaly’s reputation as Irelands Green Energy County.
"This announcement is a monumental step for County Offaly and the entire Midlands region," said Eoghan Ryan Chief Executive at Offaly County Council. " The continued transformation of a former thermal power site into a state-of-the-art industrial [ER1.1] [ER2.1] park demonstrates how the region can lead Ireland's transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy innovation. We are thrilled that Google and Energy Dome have chosen Rhode Green Energy Park to pioneer this critical long-duration energy storage solution. Mike Vasconcelos Tocchetti and Laura Perri of Energy Dome were valued participants at Offaly County Council’s Green Energy Conference earlier this year, so we are particularly pleased to the see this project progress here.
Offaly County Council would like to acknowledge the projects’ local developers/owner and operator Lumcloon Energy for their technical leadership, and the North Offaly Development Fund for their unwavering commitment to driving jobs and growth in North Offaly."
