Tax and VAT for Beginners

This programme is designed to enable participants to develop their understanding of the legal taxation requirement for a small business.  Participants will gain a working knowledge of Taxation issues and the ways in which to manage accounts and prepare tax accounts. They will be shown the correct assessment forms required by the Revenue and be guided through their completion. 

Objectives of the Workshop

• Review premises requirements and legal obligations
• Be introduced to the concept of business taxation and the correct method of accounting of same
• Understand Business Taxation i.e. Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax, Self- Assessment, Deferred Tax, Thresholds and Exemptions
• VAT:  Registration;  income threshold; rates and completion and reconciliation

• Reporting requirements of limited companies, sole traders and partnerships
• The Self-Assessment system 
• Preliminary Tax – What & When to Pay
• Capital Allowances/chargeable gains
• The PRSI System
• The completion of an Income Tax return
• Personal Allowances and Rate Bands 
• Tax and PRSI Liability
• The VAT System - Calculating VAT and preparing VAT returns (The trainer will provide blank VAT Forms and facilitate a point by point explanation)
• Important Dates – Trainer will distribute a Checklist
