Borrisoleigh firm wins the 2016 County Enterprise Awards

           

Borrisoleigh firm Andy Spillane Bespoke Furniture Ltd emerged as the overall winner of the 2016 County Enterprise Awards, announced at a ceremony held at Bru Boru, Cashel on Friday 11 March. Rearcross based Lisduff Foods Ltd was the runner up and Thurles based Pressure Welding Manufacturing Ltd won third place.

Dundrum’s Eavaun Carmody T/a Killenure Dexter won a special award for Excellence in Material Utilisation and Clogheen’s DMA Foods Ltd won a special award for Innovation.  The local competition carries a prize fund of €5,000 in addition to commemorative trophies and certificates and 14 entries were shorted listed to compete in the County Competition.

The winners were announced by Sinead Carr, Director of Community & Economic Development with Tipperary County Council. Ms Carr in her welcome address applauded the 14 finalists for their contribution to the Tipperary economy in terms of jobs and spend and overall heightening the profile of the diverse range of micro-enterprises in the County. Ms Carr went on to say that “I am pleased to see that the food sector is featuring strongly in this year’s competition with dairy, pork, beef, potatoes, coffee, rapeseed oil - all being processed here in the County. In fact the agricultural and agri-tech sector offers huge potential for development in Tipperary and I am therefore delighted to see firms like HerdWatch emerging with leading technology.   The productive sector with furniture manufacturers, steel fabrication, engineering and security solutions are all represented here today and performing exceptionally well on both the domestic and in some cases international markets. I am also pleased to see that the Tourism sector is featuring on the shortlist” Ms Carr continued. (A full list of finalists is appended to this release.)

This year’s competition was open to all Local Enterprise Office M1 and M2 clients/ grant beneficiaries. From the County to National stages the competition is adjudicated using a standard criteria and marking system. The competition was adjudicated by Martin Troy, Manager AIB and Mary Ryan, CPA, MIATI who are both members of the LEO’s Evaluation and Approvals Committee.

Speaking on behalf of the adjudicators, Martin Troy outlined the criteria set nationally for the competition and confirmed that entries had been marked according to employment potential, marketing strength, financial strength, innovation/technology and quality of the business plan. Martin said that “the adjudicators were limited to that submitted and in some cases supporting documentation could have made a big difference to the outcome”.

Andy Spillane Bespoke Furniture Ltd T/a Savvy Kitchens will now progress to the Regional Final to compete against Clare, Limerick and Kerry and onwards to the National Finals which takes place in the Aviva Stadium Dublin on 9 June next.  This was the second all-county Enterprise Awards and brought Local Enterprise Week to a successful conclusion in County Tipperary.

Brodeen Fabrications Ltd is a stainless steel and mild steel fabrication and installation company that specialises in the installing of process pipe work in both stainless and carbon steel. The Company was set up just 9 months ago by Damien Grisewood and Joanne Duggan to offer a mix of  steel fabrication and installation solutions on and off site. Damien is a metal fabricator and welder with extensive experience of managing large scale on site projects. The Company’s growth plan includes three distinct routes; maintenance work with long term contracts in place, contract site work and workshop fabrication.

Cavanagh Kitchens Ltd is a kitchen and bedroom design and manufacturing operation set up by twin brothers Gilbert and Michael Cavanagh. The Company has an impressive showroom in Tipperary town and a workshop equipped with state of the art machinery and technology. The Company supplies and fits quality furniture to suit all budgets. Their customer base is domestic with significant repeat business coming from Cork, Galway, Kerry and Dublin. The Company carries almost all of the assembly process in factory minimising fitting time and disruption for the customer. The Company recently invested in new equipment including a C+C machine to expedite the manufacturing process and use Articad drawing equipment to show clients new kitchen/bedroom options in 3D design.

Chimney Draught Stop Ltd. has designed and patented a unique heat retention solution for use in chimneys. The Company supplies and fits the Chimney Draught Stop to private, local authority and residential developments. The Chimney Draught Stop has been independently certified to comply with all ISO and BS standards and specifications. The product allows you to close off the chimney when the fireplace is not in use. This will generate savings of between 15% and 25% on your heating bills annually. The company based in Templemore was established in April 2009 and now supplies domestic, Northern Ireland and UK Markets. 

DMA Foods Ltd is a food technology company established in 2012 by Denis Mc Carthy to develop and build solutions around human nutritional requirements. DMA Foods Ltd identifies real life problems encountered by consumers in their everyday lives and applies a scientific and practical approach to solving them. The Promoter, an Electronic Engineer and commercial potato grower with over 20 years experience researched the potential of developing a potato product that would add value and become a class leader internationally.  DMA Foods with their new Crispin’s brand intend to capture a percentage of the global health and wellness snack food market with their truly unique and delicious range of potato and vegetable crisps. The Company’s growth strategy is underpinned by innovation and patented processes whereby the calorific content of the raw material has been significantly reduced and a cooking process which uses no oil or fats as part of the toasting process.

Emerald Oils is the only cold pressed rapeseed oil produced in Munster. The product is high in omega 3, 6 and 9 and is a good source of Vitamin E, low in saturated fat, GM free with no artificial preservatives and 100% traceable . Michael Corbett and his family are proud that they are the third generation to farm some of the most fertile and productive soil in Ireland. Every single stage in creating Emerald Rapeseed Oil is completed from start to finish on the farm ; sowing the seed to harvesting, pressing and bottling. Since its launch just six months ago, the product is now stocked in 29 Supervalu stores and 10 health food shops and butchers across the Country. The firm is proposing to supply hotels, restaurants and bakeries and future new product development will include salad dressings, mayonnaise and essential oils for the health & beauty industry.

FRS Networks Development Ltd T/a Herdwatch has developed a software application for Farmers, enabling timely and easy recording of various events related to specific animals, such as calf registration, breeding information, illnesses, remedies etc.  The on line application was launched in February 2014 and is configured for all mobile devices and automatically synchronises data to a secure online database via the mobile internet, without the need for a desktop or laptop pc.  Herdwatch is fully approved by the Department of Agriculture and compliant with Bord Bia’s quality schemes. Once data is uploaded onto the system it can be transferred to update national records i.e. imputing a calf registration using the app will automatically update the on-farm bovine herd register which is a requirement under the Bovine Animal Identification System and the app cuts down on up to 4 hours administration for the farmer per week. Herdwatch won 2014 National Ploughing Innovation Award, the SFA 2015 Emerging New Business, the AIB Start Up Academy and the 2015 NEA Innovation Award.   With 2 million cattle farmers in the US and EU alone, Herdwatch has global sales potential.

Killenure Dexter Gourmet was established by Eavaun Carmody (a professional artist and bronze caster) in 2013 to supply premium boutique beef to high –end gastronomy   outlets.   Dexter is a native Irish premium cattle breed indigenous to the parish of Dundrum. The Killenure Castle herd is the largest herd in Ireland and Eavaun was the first to sell Dexter beef commercially .   La Rousse distribute the beef to the Country’s top restaurants and hotels.   The Promoter is in the process of producing their first range of charcuterie products with plans to launch a range of dairy products later in the year. Killenure also produces premium leather which is currently used in the restoration of antique furniture within the Castle and are in the process of developing a range of luxury designer handbags and wallets. The accessory range will be embellished with horn sourced from the Dexter Herd. The entire animal and bi products are processed in this artisan rural enterprise.  

Lisduff Fine Foods is a specialist food processing company focused on producing the finest quality, innovative award winning pork products for the modern consumer. The business was started in 2012 by Robert Tormey who hails from four generations of quality butchers. In 2015 the management structure changed and Robert was joined by his brother Mike and Seamus Hegarty. The Award Winning Marinated Roast-in-Bag bacon is the company’s flagship product and comes in several flavours including Honey & Mustard, Hickory, Smoked and Caribbean. The quality of this product was recognised at the Great Taste Awards in London in 2013 where it achieved a Gold Star. The company also produce a range of black and white puddings from an old Tormey family recipe which has been passed down through generations of Artisan Butchers. This unique speciality product is completely mixed and produced from raw ingredients at the company’s premises in Rearcross. The quality of the puddings was also recognised at the Great Taste Awards in London in 2013 where it also received a Gold Star.

The Little Milk Company Ltd  was established in March 2007 to act as the product development and marketing body for 10 organic milk producers located throughout Ireland. Collectively, their total milk pool is a very significant 3 million litres per annum. The Little Milk Company  produce premium cheddars and soft cheeses across three vintages- cheddar, organic Irish Brie and Brewers Gold . They are all made with local organic ingredients of the highest quality. The Company’s  multi award winning cheeses are exported all over the world and are available in over 1,500 stores in 10 countries.  On the domestic market the range is available in Tesco, Dunnes, Supervalu and Avoca stores.   The Company has won 25 awards to date including the Best Organic Cheese in the World in 2013.  Production is outsourced to experienced cheese makers  ensuring that the product caters for as many market segments  as possible. 

Pónaire Ltd imports raw coffee beans from around the world, roasts and blends them to sell into the Food Service and Retail market in Ireland and UK. Initially the business was set up in a small warehouse in Tipperary Town but in 2009 relocated to a customised Roastery in Annacotty Business Park in Limerick. In 2015, the business invested significantly to renovate an old building on Main Street, Newport into a “state of the art” Roastery production facility which includes space for roasting, blending, grinding and packing coffee. A dedicated area to blend and package tea and an automated line for the production of Nespresso® compatible capsules has also been developed. Since 2009, Ponaire has won 15 Great Taste Awards for its coffees which is testament to the quality of the product they produce.

Pressure Welding Manufacturing Ltd is a mechanical engineering company, specialising in orbital welding and in the fabrication of stainless steel. It was established by Jack O’Dwyer and has been successfully operating in Thurles for nearly forty years. The Company mainly manufactures steel items to order for pharmaceutical, beverage, food and semiconductor industries. The high standards demanded by these industries ensure that the business manufactures precision stainless steel products to the highest quality. Additionally, the company provides the specialised orbital welding service and was one of the first companies in Ireland to use this particular type of weld. In 2015, Sinead O’Dwyer, Chief Operations Manager won the Established Business Category of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition in Tipperary and was crowned Tipperary’s Best Young Entrepreneur 2015.

Savvy Kitchens was established by Andy Spillane in 2007. The Company based in Thurles design, manufacture and install bespoke fitted furniture for both the private and commercial sectors.   In house manufacturing of in-frame doors gives Savvy a unique advantage over competitors as it allows more flexibility with sizes and reduced lead times. Savvy Kitchens has in place a specialised in house team which includes Designers, CNC operators, Cabinet makers and Fitters who work to exacting standards to produce unique furniture solutions for the high end consumer market. The Promoter has appeared on the RTE Series “Room to Improve” on a several occasions and has completed a number of high profile contracts in Cardiff, Belfast, London and other export markets.

Speciality Ireland/Speciality Golf & Events is a bespoke travel and leisure arrangement service for global clients both private and corporate with a particular emphasis on golf, events and incentive travel. The Promoter set up this specialist business in 2001 and is passionate about creating memorable travel experiences for customers visiting Ireland, Europe and North America. Based on 15 years experience, Cathal is convinced that old fashioned customer service and attention to detail underpin the success of Speciality Ireland where repeat business and referrals are the norm. The firm relies heavily on technology and social media to communicate with their global customer base which extends to USA, UK, Europe, Australia & Asia. The firm has ambitious growth plans which includes opening a sales office in the US to leverage existing relationships and introduce new products and destinations.  

Third Eye Technology Ltd manufactures and installs a range of electronic security solutions for the industrial, commercial and the SME sectors. The firm designs and supplies bespoke security systems to meet with client needs and prides itself on its service and support team which operates nationwide providing 24 hour telephone and online support. Solutions provided include Intrusion Detection, Access Control, Perimeter Protection, Monitoring and Site Management as well as Retail Fraud Protection Systems.   The Company was established in 2001 by Gerry Higgins based in Nenagh and is approved by NSAI to EN 50132 standard.
