A practical photography workshop for artists and creative practitioners who want their images to truly reflect their practice. In conjunction with Creative Ireland and Clare County Council Arts Office this workshop is led by Aishling Muller, a lens-based artist whose practice places documentation at the centre of how work is presented, shared, and sustained beyond its physical moment.
The aim of this two-day course is to equip participants with the skills needed to create clear, authentic images of their artwork for use in funding applications, exhibitions, portfolios, publications, and digital platforms. The workshop focuses on working with natural light, understanding composition, and developing a consistent documentation approach that accurately reflects artistic intention.
Programme Overview
This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the key principles of photographing artwork and installations, with an emphasis on clarity, consistency, and purpose.
Participants will gain an understanding of how documentation functions as an extension of their creative practice and how images continue to represent their work long after an exhibition or project has ended. The programme combines technical instruction with practical application, allowing participants to immediately apply learning to their own work.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand how to photograph artwork using natural light
- Use camera settings effectively for documentation purposes
- Compose and frame images with intention and clarity
- Photograph 2D, 3D, and small-scale installation work
- Edit and refine images for professional presentation
- Prepare images suitable for applications, exhibitions, and online use
Course Delivery
The workshop is delivered over two full days and is highly practical in nature. Learning is supported through demonstrations, guided exercises, discussion, and one-to-one feedback. Group sizes are kept small to ensure individual attention and meaningful engagement.
Participants are asked to bring one small artwork, a digital camera with manual or semi-manual settings, a tripod, and a laptop for editing.
