Call for Irish Crafters to Feature in International Craft Hub Exhibition

Craft makers across Ireland are invited to apply to be part of an international exhibition landing in Ireland at Visual in August 2023 as part of Craft Hub. Craft Hub is a European project co-funded by Creative Europe focused on craft in the context of cultural heritage and its continuing relevance in contemporary practice.

In 2023, Craft Hub will celebrate and showcase the skill and innovation of contemporary craft makers in an international exhibition. The exhibition will commence in the beautiful city of Matera, Italy, in April 2023, before proceeding to venues in Germany, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Wales, with the final exhibition in Norway in October 2023.

The exhibition will feature work from across the whole spectrum of craft techniques and uses an anonymous selection process, giving emerging artists an equal opportunity to be selected alongside established makers.

Welcoming the call and the hosting of the exhibition in Visual, Cllr. Brian O’Donoghue, Cathaoirleach with Carlow County Council, said, “I am delighted we are hosting this exhibition.” Brian continued to say, "The craft and creative sector is not just about aesthetics, it's about cultivating a vibrant and dynamic economy that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural expression. It's about harnessing the power of art and design to drive growth, create jobs, and bring people together in meaningful ways. Investing in this sector is not just a cultural imperative, it's an economic one as well, and that is why we, as a Council, are delighted to be lead partners in the Craft Hub Programme.”

Commenting on the project, Kieran Comerford, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise in the Local Enterprise Office, said, “This is a great opportunity for craft makers across Ireland to be part of a global celebration of creativity and expression.” Comerford continued to say, “Showcasing craft for a maker can be a transformative experience for many reasons. First and foremost, it provides an opportunity to share a unique perspective and vision with the world. Exhibiting at a craft exhibition allows people to express themselves creatively and inspire others in the process. Additionally, it can create a sense of community and provide valuable networking opportunities with like-minded individuals.”

Concluding, Comerford said that “exhibiting work can make a significant impact on crafters' lives. It is an effective way to build a portfolio and showcase one's work to potential clients, collaborators, and employers. Furthermore, being recognized and gaining prestige within the industry can lead to increased opportunities and exposure. Overall, showcasing your craft can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience that can lead to personal and professional growth, while also contributing to a larger creative community.”
