Carlow County Council Pilots New “Sensory Sunday” at The Exchange

Sensory Sunday

Carlow County Council is delighted to announce the launch of a new pilot initiative, “Sensory Sunday”, specially designed for families with children with additional needs. The programme will run three times between now and Christmas at The Exchange, Potato Market, Carlow Town, offering families a calm, safe, and fun environment to enjoy together.

The first Sensory Sunday will take place in partnership with Scats Bouncing Castles and the Sensco Sensory Bus, offering children a unique opportunity to explore and play in a supportive and welcoming setting. This event has been carefully designed to create a positive environment where children of all abilities can engage, interact, and enjoy themselves at their own pace.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Sensco Sensory Bus, a mobile multi-sensory environment that provides a safe and stimulating space for children to discover and learn through sensory play. This resource is tailored to meet a wide range of needs, encouraging creativity, relaxation, and exploration.

In addition, bouncing castles will be available, adapted specifically to ensure quiet, fun-friendly play. These modifications allow children to experience the joy of active play without feeling overwhelmed, creating a more comfortable and inclusive atmosphere.

To complement these activities, families can also look forward to a variety of gentle games and activities. Each has been designed to be inclusive, engaging, and supportive, ensuring that every child can take part, regardless of ability or sensory needs.

Speaking about the initiative, Cllr Paul Doogue, Mayor of Carlow Municipal District, said:  “As Mayor, I am proud that Carlow County Council is piloting this new ‘Sensory Sunday’ initiative. It is vital that we create inclusive opportunities where every child and family can enjoy themselves in a safe and welcoming environment. This project reflects our commitment to supporting families and ensuring that Carlow is a place for everyone.”

Kieran Comerford, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise with Carlow County Council, added: “The Exchange was designed as a community space at the heart of Carlow, and initiatives like Sensory Sunday show how it can adapt to meet the needs of all families. We want to make The Exchange a place where everyone feels welcome, supported, and able to enjoy positive experiences together.”
