Seven County Carlow projects to benefit from Town and Village Renewal Scheme

Seven Towns and Villages in County Carlow are set to benefit from €524,256 in investment in a variety of projects as part of the announcement today by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys of the Department of Community and Rural Development's Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Councillor Tom O’Neill Cathoirleach of Carlow County Council said, “I welcome this funding for the County and the support from government for County Carlow”. The Cathaoirleach continued to say, “The Town & Village Renewal Scheme forms an important part of our work as a local authority with communities and the development of key projects which enhance our rural towns and villages to make them attractive places in which to live and work”. Concluding the Cathaoirleach said “I’d like to thank the communities who engaged with us in order to prepare these projects and this funding allocation is proof that the partnership approach for County Carlow is working”.

Speaking about the funding , Kathleen Holohan , Chief Executive with Carlow County Council “The 2020 scheme, in particular, supported projects and strategic interventions that placed a particular emphasis on the economic and social recovery of towns and villages in response to Covid-19. This included public realm, tourism , heritage and future planning projects which are designed to make towns and villages more accessible in the context of Covid-19 public health requirements or supports for projects with a direct economic component”.

The Chief Executive said, “The application process for the scheme is a partnership process. Our communities working with their elected members and our executive developed the applications via a series of online workshops and meetings”.

 “Personally , I’d like to thank the communities who worked with the support of Helen Ryan , Economic Development Officer who co-ordinates the scheme , the elected members and our Area Offices with Kieran Cullinane our Senior Engineer who assisted with the Technical Development of the projects.

 “Over the coming weeks we will put together a delivery plan for the projects and we look forward to seeing these projects getting off the ground in 2021 and working with the communities to develop future projects under the scheme”.
