Student Enterprise Programme redesigned to challenge students entrepreneurial mindset

Student Enterprise Programme 2020

Carlow County Councils – Local Enterprise Office has opened up applications for the 2020/21 Student Enterprise Programme which is designed to challenge students entrepreneurial mindset in a series of activities and actions which build towards a pitch at the County Final in 2021 where one team will be named the County Carlow – Student Enterprise Award Winner.

Launching the programme while also acknowledging the National Final Winners from Tullow Community School , Cllr Tom O Neill , Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said “As Cathaoirleach I personally love when we as a Local Authority work with young people to support the development of life long skills like are developed in the Student Enterprise Programme”. O’Neill continued to say, “I was delighted to meet the award winning Students from the Making It Happen and Last Straw Groups in Tullow Community School with their teacher , Mr. Brian Larkin to firstly present their prizes but also hear their story of their Student Enterprise Programme Experience supported by the Local Enterprise Office”. O’Neill concluded by saying “I look forward to seeing the work of this years programme which will be delivered in very different times and I applaud our Team in the Local Enterprise Office in particular Aine Carey our Enterprise Executive who will co-ordinator the programme for 2020/21”.

The Student Enterprise Programme, an initiative run by the Network of Local Enterprise Offices, is Ireland’s largest and most successful student enterprise programme with over 26,000 second level students taking part each year.

Students get to set up and run their own business and find out what it’s really like to be an entrepreneur by taking part in this 8-month long enterprise education learning programme. As part of this programme, guidance will be provided in the form The Programme runs from September to May, and students get to do everything a real life entrepreneur would do from coming up with the business idea to marketing, sales and preparing a business plan/business poster..

Speaking about the programme, Aine Carey , Enterprise Executive  with the Local Enterprise Office in Carlow County Council said: “The Student Enterprise Programme and Awards are a brilliant way of harnessing all your talents and ideas forging them into a new business.” Carey continued to say, “They are a wonderful vehicle for promoting the importance of entrepreneurs to the local economy.”

Pauline Hoctor , Senior Enterprise Development Officer with the Local Enterprise Office in Carlow County Council said: “The student enterprise programme is the biggest celebration of secondary school entrepreneurs in the country every year. Thanks to the support of teachers from all schools in County Carlow, the Student Enterprise Programme links in with the school curriculum around enterprise in the classroom and really helps students gain skills and practical knowledge of running a real-life business. The programme also encourages more students to consider entrepreneurship as a future career choice, with the Local Enterprise Office on hand to help.”
