Empowering Entrepreneurs 50+ – Start-Up Up Boot Camp

The Empowering Entrepreneurs 50+ initiative, launched by Carlow County Council in partnership with County Carlow Chamber, Carlow County Development Partnership, Carlow Community Enterprise Centres, Southeast Technological University, and The Entrepreneurs Academy, is designed to support individuals aged 50 and over who are eager to transform their business ideas into reality. This programme aims to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of an often-overlooked demographic, recognizing that older entrepreneurs bring a wealth of life experience, resilience, and creativity to the business world.

The Start-Up Competition 2025 offers an exciting opportunity for participants to showcase their innovative ideas. With a prize fund of over €2,000, the competition not only offers a financial reward but, more importantly, fosters confidence and belief in the power of entrepreneurship at any stage of life. Participants will have the chance to compete in two categories: one for those with a fresh business idea and another for businesses that have been operational for less than eighteen months.

Applications are now open, and successful applicants will be invited to a 1.5-day intensive programme, culminating in a pitch presentation and prize-giving event. This comprehensive programme has been carefully designed to guide participants through the process of refining their business ideas, developing a sustainable business model, and preparing an impactful pitch.

Day 1: Laying the Groundwork for Your Business Idea

The first day of the programme focuses on building a solid foundation for each participant’s business idea. In the morning session, participants will be introduced to the world of entrepreneurship, exploring the key elements of a successful business. Through guided exercises, they will learn how to identify market opportunities, validate their ideas, and understand the competitive landscape.

One of the most important aspects of Day 1 is the introduction to the Business Model Canvas. This powerful tool will help participants map out the key components of their business, including their value proposition, target market, and revenue streams. By the end of the morning, participants will have a clear vision of their business idea’s potential and how to take the next steps.

In the afternoon, we will shift focus to marketing and funding strategies. Understanding how to market your start-up effectively is essential, and participants will receive practical tips on building a brand and leveraging digital marketing tools. Additionally, they will gain insight into funding options available for over-50 entrepreneurs, including potential routes to financing and how to craft a compelling pitch to attract investors or partners.

Day 2: Perfecting the Pitch and Preparing for Success

The second day of the programme is dedicated to preparing participants for the final pitch presentation. After revisiting the competition structure and judging criteria, participants will be trained on how to create a strong, concise, and persuasive business pitch. Effective pitching is not just about presenting a great idea but also about engaging the audience, demonstrating market understanding, and showing potential for growth. Mentors will provide one-on-one coaching to help refine participants’ pitches and boost their confidence.

Participants will then practice delivering their pitches in small groups, receiving constructive feedback from both peers and mentors. This invaluable practice will help ensure that each participant is well-prepared for the final presentation.

In the afternoon, the programme will focus on the road ahead for each participant. Whether they are presenting a fresh idea or refining an existing business, each participant will leave the programme with a clear action plan, including next steps, goals, and strategies for building a successful business.

The day will culminate in the pitch competition and prize-giving ceremony, where the best business ideas will be rewarded. While the financial prizes are significant, the true reward lies in the personal growth and belief that participants will have gained throughout the process.
