The aim of this course is to help new retail owners or people considering going into retail to develop their business idea. The course will give you awareness of the steps necessary to start your own retail business and to stimulate new ideas and help participants move closer to pending or developing their retail outlet.

The course will cover the following topics:

• Overview of the current dynamics of retail sector in Ireland
• Researching your idea and understanding the importance of consumer input in this phase
• Overview of legislation covering the retail sector
• Understanding the financial model, profit margins, sales thresholds and hidden costs of retailing e.g. Insurance, expected rent costs.
• Getting prepared for launch including shop design, layout, merchandising, lighting, and the critical importance of where to locate your store
• Understanding the legislation governing the retail sector and how to comply with this.

The course will also include a presentation by Carlow Town Team on the 2014 incentive schemes to assist in the development of your retail idea.
