Have you got a business idea that you want to explore? Or, are you about to embark on running your own business? Then our Start Your Own Business programme is for you! This six-week programme will provide you with the steps involved in setting up your own business.

Target Participant

This programme - delivered by Eamon Curtin of mybusiness.ie - is designed for anyone with a specific business idea in mind and a firm commitment to develop the business idea.

 

Aim

The specific objective of the programme is that each participant develops a written Business Plan over the duration of the course. By the end of the course participants will have a first draft Business Plan with specific recommendations to develop the Business Plan further.

 

Course Content

The content covers five key topics:

  1. Planning the Business
  2. Sales and Marketing
  3. Operations
  4. Finance
  5. Taxation

Effective use of ICT such as spreadsheets, CRM systems, mail merge for direct marketing, the internet and social media and accounts packages is emphasised throughout.

The course is divided into modules with prescribed reading, homework, knowledge and skills based objectives and assessment methodologies.

 

Outline

Over six evening sessions, the course encourages each participant to explore the business idea in a structured framework that covers questions such as:

  • Why do I want to set up a business?
  • What are my business goals?
  • What qualifications, skills and experience do I bring to the business?
  • How do I write a Business Plan?
  • What is my product?
  • Who are my customers? Why do they want my product? Who is the competition?
  • Why will customers buy from me and not the competition?
  • How do I promote my business to my customers? What will it cost?
  • What people, equipment, premises and other resources do I need? What will they cost?
  • What business structure should I use?
  • How do I comply with Health & Safety and Employment legislation?
  • Is my business profitable? Is it cash positive? Do I need investment? Where can I get it?
  • What are my tax liabilities and how can I comply?

 Checklists and worksheets are provided where appropriate to encourage the participants to apply the ideas discussed to their own business idea.

  • regular email with hints, tips and ideas for business owners
  • exclusive access to online business knowledge database of articles, tips and book reviews
