Kerry Students Excel at National Student Enterprise Awards 2022

“Innovation and Inspiration as Young Kerry Entrepreneurs excel in Kerry County Council Student Enterprise Awards!”

The National Final of the Student Enterprise Awards was held in The Helix on May 18th and Kerry students excelled and took 4 National Awards.

Our Junior Category entrants "Roley Poley" created two products; an outdoor bench and retrofit seat covering to ensure to ensure a dry seat after a rain shower. The team consisted of Cait Daly, Kristen O'Connor, Ellie Curtin, Brid Curtin and Laura McShane from Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland. The business won a National Intellectual Property Award and secured third place in the Junior category.

Our senior category entrant, "Mearscaoilte Lao" - a farm safety mechanism which allows ropes under tension on a calving jack to be instantly released at the flick of a lever is the brainchild Katelyn Curtin and Orlaith Buckley from Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland. The business also received an Intellectual Property Award and a Special Merit award in the Senior category.

Tomas Hayes, Head of Kerry Local Enterprise Office said "I am delighted for the schools, the students, their teachers and parents. It is a notable achievement for Presentation Secondary School in Castleisland to bring home four National Awards. This competition has over 16,000 entrants across six different categories so it a great outcome. I must commend the teachers Edward Clarke and Pierce Dargan for their efforts and the mentor Paola Kennedy for her support".

Margaret Murphy, Kerry Programme Coordinator emphasised "This was a very strong programme in 2022 requiring extensive work by students, teachers, mentors and staff which was made more difficult this year because of the restrictions of Covid-19. The results are evident with four National Awards".
