Primary Schools Enterprise Programme - Bí Gnóthach

Bí Gnóthach is an educational programme that introduces 5th and 6th class pupils to the key aspects of setting up and running a business, while helping them understand the world of work. Pupils work in small teams and take part in practical activities that guide them from the early idea stage through planning, production and selling. The programme uses real-life situations so pupils can learn by doing and build confidence in their own abilities.

Since its introduction, Bí Gnóthach has supported enterprise education in primary schools by helping pupils develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication and decision-making. Through a structured programme, pupils learn how businesses operate and how they can play an active role in their own community. The focus is on creating an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience that links with many areas of the primary curriculum.

By following the programme, pupils gain an understanding of the main parts of enterprise, including:

  • What makes a business succeed
  • Coming up with ideas and choosing the best one
  • Carrying out simple market research
  • Keeping clear and accurate records
  • Managing money and funding
  • Making a product or providing a service
  • Promoting and advertising their business
  • Learning about enterprise in a global context
  • Exploring the world of work

Pupils keep an Enterprise Diary during the programme. This helps them record their ideas, track their progress and reflect on what they have learned. The diary also supports literacy development by encouraging clear and simple writing about real experiences.

The programme encourages links between the school, home and local community. Pupils may carry out surveys, talk to family members or engage with local businesses. This helps them see how enterprise works in real life and understand their role as active members of society.

Overall, Bí Gnóthach aims to build pupils’ confidence, creativity and independence. It supports them in becoming active learners who can work with others, solve problems and take initiative. The programme helps children to develop skills that are useful both in school and in later life, while promoting a positive attitude to learning and enterprise.
