Just Grab the Mic: Claim Your Space as an Entrepreneur

Our Summer Barbecue is one of the highlights of the year, and this year we’re opening with a session inspired by one of the Calls to Action from Prof Maura McAdam’s book Permission Granted: Just Grab the Mic– which is a call for women to claim the identity of entrepreneur and take up the space that comes with it.

Across the entrepreneurial landscape, one pattern keeps appearing: capable, ambitious women who hesitate to name themselves as entrepreneurs. Not because the ambition isn’t there, but because the identity can feel big, exposed, or somehow “too much.”  This session is about stepping into that identity fully.  “Grabbing the mic” isn’t about volume or performance.It’s about presence; clear, grounded presence that lets people see who you are and what you bring.

Entrepreneurship has long been shaped around someone else’s blueprint.This session invites you to claim the role on your own terms, without shrinking, qualifying, or apologising.  Whether you’re at the early stages or building something significant, this session is designed to help you own the identity you’ve already earned.

What we’ll cover:

• Why it is important to “grab the mic”
• How to claim the identity of “entrepreneur” with clarity
• What commonly gets in the way and practical ways to move through it
• How values act as anchors when you take up more space
• Simple techniques to steady self‑doubt and show up with conviction

Speaker Profile: Professor Maura McAdam

Professor Maura McAdam is an internationally recognised expert in entrepreneurship. A Professor of Management and Director of Entrepreneurship at Dublin City University, she is consistently ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide for research impact. As an NLP Master Practitioner, Maura blends evidence‑based insight with practical mindset and communication tools to help entrepreneurs build confidence, visibility, and strong professional networks. Her new book, Permission Granted, which was published on 17 March 2026.
