Building Craft and Enterprise Design Programme 2018

A seven month programme run in partnership between the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI) and the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Dublin City.

We are looking for ambitious craft & design enterprises who want to inject new ideas and approaches to product development into their practice.Boost your product into the market through a series of design led workshops.

Building Craft and Design Enterprise Programme (Expressions of interest is currently open, for a March 2019 start)

Over the course of seven months you will undertake:

  • Research mission to London trade show & retail visits.
  • Enhance your design and product 
  • Brand your product effectively.
  • Cost and promote your product in the marketplace & exploring export
  • 10 days training
  • Bespoke 1-2-1 mentoring sessions
  • Enter for a stand in the Enterprise Zone of Showcase Ireland 2019


Workshop 1: Introduction to the Building Craft and Enterprise Design Programme 

  • How marketing principles apply to thee creative sector?Is there a demand for what you make? Do you know your best route {s} to market? Who are your competitors? How can you keep visible? Are you up to speed with trends for Design 2018 and beyond?

Workshop 2: Product  Development Part 1 

  • How do you approach making ? Do you think design, function, form? Building on your success. What do you present your work / Production planning. Time management

Workshop 3: My Business Structure & Organisation 

  • 10 Steps to good business practice

Workshop 4: Costing and Pricing my design and production 

  • How much is your customer willing to pay? How can you get a good margin?

Trade Show Research: London based Trade Show & retail visits TBC

  • Accompanied research trip to London for Pulse Show or for Top Drawer or London Design Festival. Each Trade Show cohort will also include relevant retail visits. 
* Note: - Which research mission to London will be  decided on based on accepted participants disciplines.

Workshop 5: Product Development Part 2 

  • A second supportive workshop will ensure that participants have been given direction for future opportunity. In Workshop 2 participants will be facilitated to make an individual action plan of key achievable tasks to be undertaken to improve the viability of their product or R & D of alternative products.    
* Note: - Final dates will depend on which research mission to London is decided on.

Workshop 6: Website audit and  Optimization 

  • A critical analysis of individual websites and optimisation and commercialisation strategy.

Workshop 7: Branding your company and your work 

  • Understanding the core principles of Branding. Do you have a strong brand identity ? How important is a strong brand for your business ? How to manage your Brand?

Workshop 8: Retail Relations & Export Potential 

  • Where are you going to sell? Online, direct retail, wholesale, internationally? Everywhere you can? What’s your strategy, have you considered design for export? How can you get into retail stores?      

 Workshop 9: One to One Mentoring in Business, Sales and Design 

  • Final Mentoring Sessions to provide particpants with the knowledge and support to take their respective ideas to the next level.

 Workshop 10: The Value of Trade Fairs for design-based business 

  • Final Mentoring Sessions to provide particpants with the knowledge and support to take their respective ideas to the next level.

     Trade Fair Preparation & Certificate Presentation 

  • Presentation and Closing Ceremony


  • Awareness of future trends
  • A move towards new products/ ranges for launch 
  • Tools you can use for future product development
  • Strategies for getting your product to market.

The fee to participate is €250 euros and the programme is heavily subsidised.

Please note by participating in this programme you will also have the opportunity to take a subsidised stand in the *Enterprise Zone in the balcony of the Main Hall at Showcase Ireland (craft, gift and fashion trade fair in January 2018).

*Enterprise Zone is the branded area of the Local Enterprise Offices and it includes promotion in an extra booklet and PR opportunities. 


  • Work full time in fashion/ ceramics/jewellery /accessories /furniture and have their brand/ label as their primary source of income
  • Interested in working with other designer-makers to grow their brand/label
  • Registered with the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI)
