Build Your Business by Design: From Self-Employed to Business Owner

Headshot

Speaker: Louise Jones, Founder, Simpson Jones

Starting a business often means swapping one boss for many — clients, deadlines and constant demands on your time. In this session, Louise Jones will explore the shift from simply being self-employed to thinking and operating as a business owner, sharing practical insights on how structure, systems and clear direction can help a business grow with purpose rather than simply drifting.

Profile: Louise Jones, Founder, Simpson Jones
Louise Jones is the founder of Simpson Jones, a specialist practice management and advisory service working with barristers and legal professionals across Ireland. With more than 25 years’ experience working closely with practitioners at the Bar, she has developed a deep understanding of the pressures faced by independent professionals who must both deliver their work and run the business behind it.

Through Simpson Jones, Louise and her team help practitioners bring structure, systems and financial discipline to their practices, enabling them to focus on the work they do best. The business also developed Barrister365, a practice management platform designed specifically for barristers.

While her work is rooted in the legal profession, Louise now increasingly works with professionals and small business owners who want to move beyond simply being self-employed and begin running their businesses with greater clarity, structure and purpose.

From Data Insights to Commercial Growth

Experts: Tracey O'Neill, Principal Consultant and Founder of The Data Consultant and Marinda Malan

Every business generates valuable customer data every day, but most aren't using it to make commercial decisions. In this practical session, data consultant Tracey O'Neill and business growth adviser Marinda Malan will walk you through how to get your customer data clean and usable, and how to turn what it reveals into focused decisions that drive revenue. You'll leave with a clear, repeatable process you can implement this month.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Build a Single Customer View — Bring your customer data into one simple table and segment your customers by value using the Recency-Frequency-Monetary-(Propensity) framework.
  • Read your Revenue Report Card — Deconstruct your revenue into new, existing, and lost customers to see what's actually driving growth and where you're quietly losing ground.
  • Make data-driven decisions — Apply a protect, grow, or replace lens to identify your highest-leverage action and set up a monthly review to keep decisions connected to reality.

Marinda Malan
MM-headshot
Marinda Malan helps founders and commercial leaders turn around underperformance—when growth has
stalled, initiatives aren't landing, and the old playbook has stopped working.
With 20+ years experience across commercial leadership and consulting in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa,
she's lived through and led turnarounds from scale-ups to established enterprises. She knows what it looks like
when unit economics are broken, leadership is stretched too thin, and teams work hard but not in the same
direction.
Marinda works with three core challenges:
  • Revenue Clarity — helping businesses see where they actually make and lose money, so they stopoptimizing the wrong things.
  • Strategic Planning & Execution — turning scattered initiatives into 3-5 clear strategic bets with anoperating system that connects strategy to weekly work.
  • Commercially Minded Marketing — ensuring GTM runs on economics and outcomes rather than activitymetrics, so growth is sustainable and repeatable.

Her approach is systematic, direct, and rooted in pattern recognition across her years of experience. Nojargon. Just commercial truth, strategic clarity, and disciplined execution.
