Why did you decide to set up your own business & how did you go about it?

My business idea came from the bespoke side of the fashion business. Over the last few years, it was an area which experienced considerable growth for me, even in the current climate, but I didn't have the professional environment to give it the care and attention it deserves.

There isn't anywhere in Ireland that has retail, consultation and a workroom all under the one roof. So I saw a niche in the market for something like that, and that was the concept behind The Design House.

What valuable lessons about running a business did you learn?

If you don't understand something, always ask someone who works in that area to explain it to you. Don't be afraid to ask questions - it's your idea, your concept, your business.

I also learned that if you really want something, keep on trying until you get it, nothing is impossible. It might be very difficult and trying at times, but not impossible.

How did the Dublin City Enterprise Board help?

The Dublin City Enterprise Board have given me invaluable advice and we have been awarded a priming grant and employment grant for 3 people.

What is the best thing or worst thing about being your own boss?

The best thing is that I can bring my new born baby boy to my office with me.

The worst thing is that there isn't lot of down time yet, but there will be...

…in 5 years’ time?

Hopefully looking into opening a similar concept design hub in other cities in Ireland and then a few years after that maybe the same in the UK - fingers crossed.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a business for the first time?

It helps to have friends that are painters and carpenters! But seriously, get your friends and family involved. Who knows  - you may uncover hidden talents such as DIY, decorating or graphic design because you will need all the help you can get.

Also, read all your paperwork, even the small print, no matter how long or tedious it may be. It always helps to be well informed.

What businessperson in Ireland do you admire?

I've always loved John Rocha because he doesn't just do fashion;  he sells a lifestyle, and he's a lovely man with a super sweet tooth.

Our thanks to Bev Flood for taking part in this Q&A.
